What is PMMA waterproofing? How does a liquid membrane work?
What is PMMA Waterproofing?
Polymethyl-methacrylate, or PMMA, is a seamless, liquid applied waterproofing system ideal for balconies, garden rooftops, decks, concrete parkade slabs, foundation walls, and any waterproofing details. This system consists of a fast curing PMMA acrylic resin, that can also be reinforced with polyester fleece. PMMA membranes are applied as a liquid, and can be applied over top of existing roof membranes. This liquid form also allows it to be a simple option for oddly shaped areas. It can even be applied over top of many existing roof membranes. PMMA can be installed just as a water proofing membrane and covered with a finishing product, or designed to be both the waterproofing and finishing look.
How does a liquid membrane work?
The PMMA membrane and other liquid membrane molecules are hydrophobic. Hydrophobic directly translates to “water-fearing”, meaning that non-polar substances such as PMMA do not want to interact with water. This means that water droplets minimize contact with the PMMA membrane, similar to a water droplet on a leaf. This chemical feature of PMMA creates a waterproofing environment and is ideal for surfaces that are continuously exposed to water or have pooling and standing water. PMMA membranes are resistant to most acids and alkalis, meaning they will stand up to what nature can throw at them better then other membrane options.
